This lecture will examine the overall trends in Korean Buddhism as understood by Japanese people from the perspectives of research history and intellectual history.
To this end, it provides an overview of the perspectives on Korean Buddhism through the research findings of leading modern Japanese scholars of Buddhism, as well as Buddhist exchanges between Korea and Japan from the introduction of Buddhism to Japan up to modern times.
It also explains how leading scholars of Yogacara and Hwaeom thought during the Three Kingdoms period, as well as Seon and Pure Land thought from the Goryeo period, have been studied in Japan, and the main research findings of Japanese scholars on Korean Buddhism during the Joseon and colonial periods.
