This course aims for an understanding of how Sŏn Buddhism, which was formed in Chinese Buddhism, has been transformed over the ages, how it has been adopted by Korean Buddhism, and also its ideological and cultural roles and influences.
Furthermore, this course aims to understand how Chan/Sŏn/Zen has existed as a common foundation for East Asian Buddhism and to explain its function and significance in Korean thought and culture.
