The purpose of this course is to understand the historical flow of Buddhist literature printing and culture in Korea, including from ancient times to the present and its historical value.
Korea has the world's oldest collection of wood-block prints and the world's first collection of metal type text.
The various Buddhist works have played a major role in the development of our printing culture.
In this course, learners will understand the history of Buddhist printing as follows: Buddhist scriptures of the Shilla era, the Tripitaka, Buddhist commentaries (Gyojang) and metal movable type prints of the Koryŏ period, the royal family and temple books of the Joseon period, and the Buddhist books and digital archives of the modern and contemporary period.
