    o Course Overview:

    The course aims to explore the common features observed across Korean Buddhism and Confucianism and distinguish their unique aspects from Chinese and Japanese counterparts. This is premised on the increasing global interest in Korean culture and arts, known as the Hallyu Wave, and the need to analyze the distinctive features of Korean Buddhism and Confucianism, which form the basis of the Korean spirit.

     

    o Learning Objectives:

    By studying the history of Korean Buddhism and Confucianism, the course aims to understand the common features of Korean thoughts, which is a characteristic of conclusion or a conclusive characteristic, as well as the thoughts of representative thinkers such as Wŏnhyo, Ŭisang, T’oegye, and Yulgok, who represent Korean Buddhism and Confucianism. Students will also be introduced to the main debates in Korean Buddhism and Confucianism, such as the debate of Four Beginnings and Seven Sentiments and the Horak debate, and analyze representative cultural assets of Buddhism and Confucianism. The goal is to understand the characteristics of Korean Buddhism and Confucianism and extract the distinctive aspects of Korean Studies.
